Jani-King International, Inc., the world’s largest commercial cleaning franchise company, announced today that it will honor Franchisee Juan Ramirez with a special recognition award and a $5,000 donation in his name to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin for his daring rescue of three children from a Milwaukee apartment fire on January 29. During the rescue, Ramirez used an extension cord as a hoist to lower children from the burning building.

“We did not want this incredible incident to go unnoticed,” said Jerry Crawford, president of Jani-King International, Inc. “Jani-King felt that making a donation to the Children’s Hospital was both a good way to honor Mr. Ramirez for his acts of bravery and to draw attention to the important role that facilities like the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin play in our communities and in the lives of our children.”

Ramirez was one of five by-standers to respond to a fire that took place in a Milwaukee apartment building. After hearing cries for help, Ramirez and a co-worker quickly responded by throwing an extension cord to the balcony and using it to hoist Ramirez into the apartment. After reaching the balcony, Ramirez pulled himself to the apartment building, smashed the window, and rescued an 18-month-old child from the fire. Ramirez then returned back into the intense fire to rescue two more children before the fire department arrived on the scene. Despite Ramirez’s bold efforts, a 28-year old woman perished in the blaze, and her child was admitted to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in critical condition.

To honor Ramirez for his selfless act, Jani-King, Inc. presented him with a special recognition award and a $5,000 donation in his name to the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Children’s Hospital. In addition to having treated one of the victims of the fire in its burn unit, the Children” Hospital is recognized as one of the leading centers for pediatric medicine in the U.S.

“On behalf of the others who helped to rescue the kids, I am happy to receive this award and donation from Jani-King to the Children’s Hospital,” said Ramirez. “I just remember hearing other kids just screaming, thought of my own kids, and knew that we had to do something.”
