After experiencing five
years of excellent service and cost savings, the East Lansing
Public Schools in Michigan has elected to continue with Jani-King
as their sole janitorial provider. In 2003, Jani-King of Michigan
signed a five-year agreement with the district for all janitorial
services.

Over the past five years, Jani-King was able to save
the district millions of dollars from their budget while
providing an extremely high level of service. Initially, the
proposed contract was met with strong opposition from a coalition
of district employees and unions, including the Michigan
Education Association. But the school board voted in June 2003 to
approve the contract, anticipating that privatization would help
to address the budget crisis then facing the school district.

The
decision paid off. After Jani-King’s first year of work for
the district, the district’s finance department reported
savings of roughly $800,000. The savings were a result of the
lower cost of services provided under the contract.

To earn the
contract extension with the district, Jani-King was subjected to
expert competition throughout the six month bid process.
According to Richard Grant, Regional Director for Jani-King of
Michigan, the East Lansing account is heavily sought-after and an
account to be admired. “We proved that we are the right
company and that we could save the district millions of dollars
while giving parents and teachers a community of schools to be
proud of.”
